Teachers - 3B
Hello! I’m Deanna Kooistra.
While I always loved school, I actually had no intention of becoming a teacher when I went to university. While growing up I was often the student for my sister, the teacher, and it was never very fun! While attending the University of Calgary I took some initial teaching classes and was hooked, completing my Bachelor of Education in 1993. I was fortunate enough to start working in Golden Hills right away filling in for maternity leaves and then securing a position teaching Kindergarten at Central Bow Valley. In 1998, I transferred to Westmount, continuing to teach Kindergarten. In 2006 an opportunity to teach grade three became available and I moved into that position.
My teaching philosophy is simple. I believe in making learning authentic and meaningful by offering as many experiences as possible. While no one will remember a worksheet they did in Grade 3, it’s my hope that real-life experiences will have a lasting impact. If you can make a child believe school is fun and interesting, you’ve likely succeeded in encouraging a lifelong love of learning in them, which is the greatest thing any teacher can do.
I am married to Clarence and we have two daughters, who attended Westmount Elementary. We live on a small farm outside of Strathmore. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, cooking, and travelling.
“I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”
